Nashik: Two children from the Viratnagar area of Ambad, aged 8 and 11 years, drowned in a farm pond on Sunday.
An Ambad police officer on Mondat said it appeared that the two slipped into the pond.
"Irshaha Shah (11) and Ashraf Khan (8) had gone to the farm pond around 5pm. As they did not return till late in the evening, their parents and relatives started searching for them.
Some neighbours told them that the two were spotted going towards the farm. Their parents went there and found the children's clothes on the edge of the pond," the officer said.
As news spread, some local residents jumped into the pond to rescue the two. However, the depth of the water and lack of visibility affected the rescue operation.
"The children were tracked after the wall on one side of the pond was broken with an earthmover and water was released. They were taken to the civil hospital around 9.15pm. However, doctors in the hospital declared them dead on arrival." the officer said.
