NEW DELHI: A portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar's Samastipur district on Sunday. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.
The bridge was being built to connect Bakhtiyarpur and Tajpur Ganga Mahasetu.
The incident comes in the backdrop of more than a dozen bridges and causeways collapsing in several Bihar districts in the recent past, including in Siwan, Saran, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran and Kishanganj districts raising major concerns about the integrity and safety of state's infrastructure.
Such incidents have been reported in several districts of Bihar, including Siwan, Saran, East Champaran, Madhubani, Araria, Muzaffarpur and Kishanganj in the past two months.
Just a week back, a portion of a bailey bridge over the Barnar river tilted to one side in Jamui district on Monday. Nobody was injured in the incident.
The bridge, which was built by the Road Construction Department last year, will become fully operational again in five days, officials said.
Chief minister Nitish Kumar had earlier instructed officials concerned to conduct a survey of all old bridges in the state, and identify those that require immediate repair.
