Raipur: As the
monsoon season comes to a close, Chhattisgarh is expected to experience another round of significant rainfall. Meteorological predictions suggest an increase in thunderstorm activity and light to moderate rainfall in central and southern parts of the state starting Saturday. Meanwhile, from Sept 23, the intensity of rainfall is expected to rise, with the possibility of scattered and widespread showers accompanied by thunder and lightning in various regions.
According to the state weather expert H.P Chandra, favorable conditions are developing for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from western Rajasthan and Kutch, beginning on Sept 23, 2024.
Currently, the monsoon trough extends across Bikaner, Guna, Mandla, Rajnandgaon, Gopalpur, and then moves southeast towards the west-central Bay of Bengal.
Two upper air cyclonic circulations have been identified—one over the west-central Bay of Bengal and the other over northern Thailand, both extending up to the middle troposphere. Due to these systems, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay on Sept 23.
As a result, there is a forecast for light to moderate rainfall or drizzles, along with thunder and lightning, at a few locations across the state on Sept 22. Isolated places may also experience lightning with thunderstorms.
Rainfall activity is expected to intensify in southern Chhattisgarh starting Sept 23.
Scattered and widespread rainfalls to occur in the regions including Sarguja, Jashpur, Koriya, Manendragarh, Surajpur, Balrampur, Bilaspur, Sakti, Mungeli, Korba, Janjgir, Balodabazar, Raipur, Gariyaband, Dhamtari, Mahasamund and nearby areas.
Between June 1 and Sept 20, Chhattisgarh recorded 1,158 mm of rainfall, exceeding the monsoon quota of 1,139.4 mm by 1.63 percent. This is also 6 percent higher than the state's average rainfall of 1,095.9 mm for the same period. Overall, the state has experienced favorable rainfall during the monsoon season so far.
Meanwhile, A 55-year-old shepherd from Phulpad village in Dantewada died after being struck by lightning while grazing goats late on Friday evening. The incident occurred as the man sought shelter under a tree during sudden rainfall.
