Shimla: Former Himachal Pradesh DGP Sanjay Kundu is among 10 police officers, including two retired ones and three superintendents, charged with harassing a constable from a scheduled tribe and dismissing him from service on “concocted charges” eight years before retirement.
The FIR (first-information report) was filed at the Shimla Sadar police station on Monday following directions from the inspector general (southern range) under Section 3(1)(b) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, based on a complaint from Meena Negi, wife of dismissed constable Dharma Sukh Negi of tribal district Kinnaur.

The action is based on a court's direction on complainant’s plea alleging that her family had gone through mental, social, and financial harassment. Meena Negi’s husband was dismissed on July 9, 2020, and senior police officers had ordered the recovery of Rs 1.43 lakh for the delayed vacation of official accommodation. The police department had also withheld her husband’s gratuity and other retirement benefits amounting to several lakh rupees, since 2020.
The Shimla police have initiated an investigation. The complainant also submitted a representation in Nov 2023 to the chief minister, chief secretary, and home secretary, but the govt took no action.
