The trailer for 'Gladiator II' dropped online and fans of the Riddley Scott franchise are still reeling in shock over the major revelation made in the clip.
As the makers turned back the clock and took viewers back in time to offer a glimpse into Rome's cut-throat world of power, vengeance, and honour. While fans were treated to some glimpses in the first clip, no one seemed prepared for the rather shocking plot twist in the new trailer.
The clip confirms that Lucius, portrayed by
Paul Mescal, is the son of Maximus, the slain hero played by
Russell Crowe in the original 'Gladiator'.
The clip sees Lucius’ mother, Lucilla played by
Connie Nielsen, telling him that he is the son of Maximus, and not Lucius Verus I, as he was led to believe. He is also seen taking up his late father's sword and breastplate as he heads into battle.

The original Oscar-winning 2000 film 'Gladiator' hinted at a romance between Lucilla and Maximus, but never confirmed the same. The characters even share a kiss in the film, before the final battle, but it is never made clear on the young boy's parentage.
Fans took to social media, to express their shock while others seemed excited over the new revelations.
The trailer immerses the audience in intense battle scenes, led by General Marcus Acacius, played by
Pedro Pascal, who invades Lucius’ home, forcing him into slavery and in turn being sold to become a Gladiator. Under the wins of Macrinus, played by
Denzel Washington, a key power player in Rome, he rises up against the young emperors Caracalla and Geta.
The star-studded cast includes Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, and Pedro Pascal, with Connie Nielsen reprising her role as Lucilla.
'Gladiator II' is set for release on 15 November in India.
