Bollywood's beloved couple,
Hema Malini and Dharmendra, tied the knot on May 2, 1980, in a union that broke traditional norms. At the time of their marriage,
Dharmendra was still married to his first wife, Prakash Kaur, leading the couple to convert to another religion to legitimize their relationship. Together, they welcomed two daughters,
Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. In a throwback interview on ‘The
Kapil Sharma Show’, Hema shared intriguing insights into their marriage, revealing that she never felt the need to play the conventional wife role to win over Dharmendra.
Reflecting on their relationship, Hema explained that both she and Dharmendra were deeply immersed in their careers, which kept them busy. "I never had to cook to make Dharam Ji happy", she remarked, highlighting the balance they maintained between their professional lives and personal relationship. However, she did mention a turning point that led her to learn cooking. As their daughters began school, Esha returned home feeling left out, often hearing her classmates boast about the homemade lunches prepared by their mothers. This prompted Hema to call her mother in frustration, admitting, "I felt bad and I called my mother and told her that because you didn’t teach me cooking, I am facing this".
With her mother’s guidance, Hema embraced cooking, eventually preparing delightful meals for her family during their vacations. The conversation took a light-hearted turn when host Kapil Sharma asked about Dharmendra's culinary preferences, to which Hema humorously noted that despite his Punjabi roots, he enjoyed traditional South Indian dishes like idli and dosa when visiting them.
As they celebrated 44 years of togetherness on May 2, 2024, fans were treated to a heartwarming glimpse of their enduring bond. A photo circulated on social media, purportedly from their anniversary celebration, showed the couple joyfully posing with garlands, radiating happiness. Dharmendra sported an orange shirt with black trousers, while Hema looked as stunning as ever in a cream and orange saree, reflecting the love and respect that has strengthened their relationship over the years.
