Celiac disease
When people who are suffering from celiac disease ingest gluten which is a kind of protein found in wheat, rye and barley, their body’s immune system gets so high that the side effect falls on their small intestine. This attack on the small intestine harms the villi (minute fingerlike projections surrounding the small intestine) which aid in absorbing the nutrients in the body. As a result of the damage caused on the villi, nutrients are not adequately absorbed by the body.
An individual’s hereditary role plays a major role in the occurence of celiac disease. People who have family members experiencing first-degree celiac disease are supposedly known to have a 1 in 10 risk factor of being prone to the disease.
There is a major difference between celiac disease and gluten intolerance, people with gluten intolerance might have similar symptoms but their small intestines don’t get impaired in any way.
