A source tells 247Sports and CBS Sports that Harold Perkins Jr., a former five-star recruit and preseason All-SEC selection, is expected to miss the rest of the 2024 season due to a torn ACL knee injury sustained during LSU's win over UCLA. Perkins, who had been viewed as a potential early-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has 162 career tackles and 13 career sacks. It is unclear if Perkins has played his last snap as a Tiger.
Perkins earned a starting position at linebacker as a true freshman coming into the 2022 fall semester. He had seven pressures in the LSU victory over Alabama and was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week after the game. After the game, LSU coach Brian Kelly commented about Perkins, "He's a throwback, and throwback in this sense, 'just tell me what to do. I don't need all the other things. And I'll figure it out as I go.'"
In week 10 against Arkansas, a performance characterized as "dominating," Perkins tied the LSU single-game record for quarterback sacks with four and also forced two fumbles, one being the game winner. After the Arkansas game, Perkins garnered the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. He also garnered the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week recognition.
Throughout the first ten games of the 2022 season, Perkins compiled 52 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception. At season's end, he earned a spot on Pro Football Focus's PFF True Freshman All-America team. For the 2023 college football season, Perkins will sport the number 4 for LSU. Perkins is a talented and athletic player, and is considered first-round material by CBS Sports draft analyst Ryan Wilson. LSU's defense ranks No. 103 nationally in yards allowed per play. The Tigers play South Alabama on Sept. 28, then host Ole Miss.
