Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A leading cloth trader from the region died by suicide after he shot himself using his licensed firearm on Tuesday morning.
Family members of the trader, 56-year-old Alkesh Bagdia of Karwa Nagar in Jalna district, rushed to his room after hearing the loud noise.
Bagdia was found lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a private hospital in Jalna from where he was referred to a super-specialty hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
As the issue involves a high-profile person from the business community, police as well as others in the know of the incident are refraining to speak anything about the incident.
Jalna deputy superintendent of police Anant Kulkarni, while talking to TOI, said, "The businessman shot himself at 9.30 am. We have been told that the bullet got stuck in his skull. He, however, died while undergoing treatment."
The officer, citing the medical reports, said the doctors were mooting to perform a surgery to remove the bullet. "Details about the incident would have to be shared by his family members. But they are not in the condition to speak," said Kulkarni.
Sources, however, informed that the firearm found at the spot has been seized and the process for sending it for examination to the ballistic and forensic experts has been initiated.
Till late evening, no FIR was registered in this incident. The Sadar Bazar police said that they were awaiting a medico-legal case from the hospital before proceeding ahead with the investigation in the case.
"If the family members come forward for lodging a complaint, a case will be registered. If that does not happen, the police will become a complainant and will file an FIR," an officer from Sadar Bazar police station said.
