Kochi: As part of developing the infrastructure and tightening security at the Kochi airport, the Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) is commissioning a perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS), on Friday. The system will detect intruders attempting to enter the airport operational area.
The PIDS is implemented by Cial using technology like a non-lethal power fence on top of the perimeter wall to detect and deter intrusion.
Chief minister
Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the project. "Fibre optic vibration sensors are installed on the 12 km perimeter wall to detect intrusion," an official with the Cial said.
Another major technology to be adapted by Cial includes a drainage intrusion detection system (DIDS) to deter and detect unauthorised access through the drainage exits at the airport perimeter boundary. DIDS is installed at 12 drainage exits to prevent such situations.
Thermal cameras are also installed across the perimeter for day and night monitoring of the boundary. "The PIDS is connected to a security operations control centre (SOCC) within the airport where the intrusion attempts and alarms are displayed in real-time to the security personnel, highlighting the specific locations of intrusion. Even attempts to intrude through drainages can be averted. This will help the security personnel to identify and respond fast and effectively," the official said.
The cost of the project implemented by M/s Tata Advanced Systems Limited is Rs 30 crore.
