Acid-attack survivor cop gets 12L compensation
Kolkata: Sumit Halder, an acid-attack survivor from Hooghly, was granted a compensation of Rs 12 lakh by the District Legal Services Authority after a prolonged treatment.
Halder, a West Bengal Police constable, was brutally attacked by his elder brother and his wife while sleeping at his home in Hooghly on Dec 19, 2023, a few days before his wedding.

He sustained severe injuries to his face, eyes, throat, neck, left hand, upper left thoracic region, frontal portion of his body, and legs. He also lost sight in one eye as a result of the attack.
Halder, who joined the Bengal Police on June 28, 2021, said that despite difficulties he got the courage to return to normal life with help of Brave Souls Foundation and the people around him. Now, he is ready to start a new journey at Bhangar PS from Monday.
“Things have changed and I have to accept that. The people around me, including the Brave Souls Foundation, helped me win this battle. However, the new challenge will start from Monday and I am ready to face it,” Halder said.
The Brave Souls Foundation will move the Calcutta High Court to seek more financial benefits for Halder’s better treatment. Aparajita Bose, the coordinator of the West Bengal Unit of the foundation, emphasized the importance of financial support for acid-attack survivors to help them lead a dignified life.
The survivor also expressed his determination to continue his battle against his elder brother and his wife.
