Nashik: The average wholesale price of onions at Lasalgaon APMC on Tuesday was recorded at Rs 4,800 a quintal.
In the retail markets of Nashik city, good quality onions were sold between Rs 70 and Rs 80 per kg due to the rise in wholesale
onion prices. Earlier, the average wholesale onion price was recorded at Rs 4,800 per quintal on Oct 28, 2023.
There has been a 30% rise in average wholesale price of onions in the last one month — from Rs 3,700 per quintal on Aug 24 to Rs 4,800 per quintal on Sept 24.
An APMC official said the rising price trend was due to increase in demand in the domestic market coupled with the depletion of the supply at the wholesale market.
"Although the daily arrival at the APMC is usually 15,000 quintals, it has now gone down to about 5,000 quintals as the summer onions have nearly exhausted," the official said.
Manoj Jain, an onion trader, said the onions arriving at the wholesale markets are the summer crops harvested in March and April. "The summer onions have a shelf life of around six months. Hence, farmers prefer storing summer them with a hope of getting better price," Jain said.
"But the summer stock of onions with farmers has almost exhausted. On the contrary, the arrival of new kharif onions is yet to start and is expected to begin around mid-Oct," he added.
The minimum and maximum wholesale onion prices at Lasalgaon on Tuesday were recorded at Rs 3,500 and Rs 4,968 per quintal, respectively.
Ravi Malode, a vegetable vendor, said the drop in the supply of onions is the major reason the retail prices have increased. "The retail prices may further increase to Rs 100 a kg in the next few days," he added.
