Bambhaniya, originally from Pithalpur village in Bhavnagar district, had moved to Surat a year ago for work. He was employed at Vaghela's diamond unit and lived on the premises. According to the complaint filed by Bambhaniya's cousin, Sanjay, Vaghela had suspected Bambhaniya and another worker, Karan, of stealing diamonds worth Rs 35,000 and cash worth Rs 20,000 from the unit eight days ago.
Thakarshi and his men were on the lookout for the two who had gone missing since then.

They cornered Bambhaniya at the unit and repeatedly assaulted him during an interrogation about the alleged theft until he became unconscious. The assailants left the scene, locking Bambhaniya inside the unit instead of taking him to the hospital.
