SH takes up road maintenance work ahead of monsoon
Trichy: The state highways department has launched a division-wide comprehensive road maintenance work on all major roads connecting the district headquarters with the smaller towns in Trichy district. The work aims at retrieving the carriageways that were hindered by the overgrown vegetations and to clear blocks on the minor culverts on rural roads for preventing inundation during the ensuing northeast monsoon.

Officials said the maintenance work was taken up in Trichy, Manapparai, Musiri, Thuraiyur, and Lalgudi sub-divisions. In Trichy sub-division, major roads in Trichy West and Trichy East sections were covered. In Trichy-Kulumani-Jeeyapuram Road, overgrown vegetation along the entire 16.4km stretch of the highway was cleared.
Similarly, the 2.5km Allithurai-Thogaimalai-Vyalanmedu stretch was cleared of obstructions. "Roadside shrubs may affect vehicular movement, particularly to two-wheeler riders. Road visibility will be impacted. If the road's width is 7m, ends of the carriageways will not be used by commuters due to the shrubs," C Natarajan, assistant engineer, state highways said.
The work was completed in west and east sections at a cost of 5 lakh each. Officials said that minor repair works were also carried out. "To ensure free flow of rainwater, minor bridges and culverts were cleaned too. Work will be completed across the division in the next few days," the official added.
