Identifying a true friend is sometimes a difficult task! Since not everyone has one's best interests. So knowing little hints that would indicate the signs to identify false friends is essential. Here are five major indicators to look for in people who might not be as supportive or trustworthy as they seem!
1. They only hang around when things are going well with youA true friend will stand by your side through thick and thin.
If a person sticks around when all is well but runs out the door when things get tough, that is a problem. Most of the time, it is a sign that they hang around for what they can get out of having you in their lives rather than because they actually care about what would be best for you. True friendship is two-way support, which would mainly require friendship during the worst times of the year. You will realize that such a person will never be around to assist you in your worst or best times.
2. They don't celebrate your successA true friend will be happy to celebrate your achievements. If they downplay your success, make smart-alecky comments, or appear jealous, it's time to reevaluate their intentions. Some people are just plain jealous or possess a fragile ego. Good friends cherish each other and celebrate each other's successes. Then you realize that whenever you have some successes, they never appreciate them or try to belittle them. In this case, it is quite evident that they are not your real friends.
3. They always turn the conversation back to themselves A healthy friendship conversation should be mutual with both parties showing interest in one another's lives. If someone keeps turning the conversation back to themselves and appears to be interested in general not to care much for your life and your experiences, then this is a symptom of self-centeredness. People who are self-centered care less about you and will at any time never work to understand your feelings and talk about such issues with a true friend. True friends listen and share meaningful dialogue, reflecting a concerned interest in your life. If they rarely let you share your thoughts and feelings, then it would be a sign that she/he does not care about the friendship.
4. They rarely initiate contact Any friendship requires two people to put their efforts toward sustaining it. If you are always initiating contact, making plans, and checking in, then chances are that such a person does not value your friendship as highly as you do. While it's normal for a pendulum to swing from time to time, if this takes place regularly, and you can almost bet on receiving something, that is usually a sign that there's a lack of genuine interest. Real friends make an effort to keep in touch and show that they're interested in you too. If you always find yourself the one making all the efforts, then it's probably time to reassess the relationship.
5. They subtly put you down True friends support and encourage. If a person constantly gives you backhanded compliments, uses sarcasm, and subtly criticizes you, then you would know that negativism lies beneath. It may be due to jealousy or to try to feel superior. A true friend will build each other up and give constructive criticisms if such is necessary. And in case you find out that the comments of somebody always make you feel belittled or discouraged, then it is patently evident that they might not be your real friend. Surround yourself with people who really support and uplift you.
