NFL has suspended Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. for one game without pay due to repeated violations of playing rules. James will appeal the suspension, and if upheld, he would be eligible to return to the Chargers' active roster on September 30. James was flagged for unnecessary roughness for a hit to Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth in the third quarter of Los Angeles' 20-10 loss.
The NFL's vice president of football operations, Jon Runyan, stated that video showed James making illegal forcible contact with his helmet.

Derwin James has been suspended for violating NFL rules, allegedly making a forcible contact with Pittsburgh TE Pat Freiermuth. The suspension was imposed during an upcoming game with the Chiefs without pay for repeated violations of playing rules. "Your continued disregard for NFL playing rules will not be tolerated," Jon Runyan wrote. "Substantial penalties are warranted when players violate the rules intended to protect player safety on a repeated basis, particularly when the violations carry with them a significant risk of injury to an opposing player.”
Despite this, coach Jim Harbaugh remains proud of James' performance, as he recently defended the 28-year-old. In a recent Chargers press conference, head coach Jim Harbaugh discussed Derwin James' personal foul penalty during a drive against the Steelers. The reporter questioned if James could have improved his technique and if Harbaugh is confident in his fit with the rules, given his past struggles with penalties.
The coach responded, “He’s [Derwin James] playing. He has found that sweet spot of playing very, very aggressively and within the rules all at the same time. That’s what I’ve noticed.” In addition, Harbaugh praised James for finding the right balance in his game. Harbaugh believes James is doing everything he should and can, including playing in various positions like nickel, dime, and safety. Despite James' aggressiveness, Harbaugh is happy that he is balancing everything without getting suspended, and is proud of his performance.
