Coimbatore: The city police shot a notorious rowdy on his knees in an act of self-defence after he attacked a cop with a knife at Codissia Ground near Hope College area here in the early hours of Saturday while they were trying to arrest him after he failed to appear before a city court in connection with a murder case.
A police officer said the rowdy - I Alwin, 40, of Vathiyarvilai near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district - had sustained gunshot wounds to the knees of both legs and was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

The officer said Alwin was one of the accused in the murder of Madurai-based R Sathyapandi, 31, who was hacked to death in full public view on Avarampalayam-Nava India Road in the city on February 12, 2023. "While Alwin surrendered before court and was remanded in judicial custody, he came out on bail in March this year. When Alwin failed to appear before the judicial magistrate court-III in the city in connection with the case, it issued a non-bailable warrant against him on July 26, 2024."
A special team led by sub-inspector Karthikeyan had been trying to trace the whereabouts of Alwin since then. "The team received a tip in the early hours of the day that Alwin was at Codissia Ground. They subsequently surrounded him up. In a bid to escape, Alwin assaulted head constable J Rajkumar, 42, of GRG Nagar at Rathinapuri, with a knife, injuring his left wrist. SI Karthikeyan suddenly opened fire on Alwin, targeting his knees," the officer said.
Deputy police commissioner (North) R Stalin, who visited the spot and met the injured head constable, said Alwin was facing 12 cases, including three murder and four attempt-to-murder cases.
City police commissioner V Balakrishnan said the SI opened fire on Alwin in an act of self-defence.
Pointing out that Sathyapandi, was a close associate of P Pasumpon Kumar, 43, of Paramakudi, another officer said the latter was planning to avenge his friend's murder. "Alwin and his associates were, meanwhile, planning to finish off Kumar, an aide of notorious rowdy Dindigul Mohanram, one of the accused in the triple murder case reported in the Sulur police jurisdiction in August 2015."
