Tourists from Maharashtra dead as car plunges into river near Kumarakom
Kottayam: Two people were killed after the car they were travelling in fell into Kaipuzha river near Kumarakom on Monday night.
Police identified one of the dead as Sayli Rajendra Sarje, 27, daughter of Rajendra Sarje, of Shivaji Chowk, Badlapura, Thane district, Maharashtra. The other dead person is a man who was travelling with her in the car.
Hearing the alarm raised by those in the car, locals soon rushed in for a rescue effort, only to find the vehicle sunk in the river.

The locals said one person is suspected to be missing. Kumarakom police, rescue units from Kottayam and Vaikom and locals were searching for the suspected missing person late into the night.
The mishap occurred around 8.45 pm near the petrol pump at Kaipuzha on Kottayam-Cherthala road. The Ernakulam-registration car was taken on rent by the people who were travelling in it. The car, which came from the Kottayam side, lost control and fell into the river. Police suspect that the accident was due to the unfamiliar route and confusion over using Google Maps.
