VADODARA/GANDHINAGAR: The school principal from Dahod district who was arrested for attempting to rape a six-year-old schoolgirl and murdering her, was remanded in police custody for four days. The Gujarat Congress said he is affiliated with constituents of the Sangh Parivar.
The principal of Torni Primary School in Singvad taluka of Dahod district, Govind Nat, was presented in a Limkheda court on Monday.
The Limkheda Bar Association resolved that none of its lawyers would represent Nat. Attempts were made to arrange a lawyer from elsewhere but eventually Nat represented himself in court.
Assistant public prosecutor S B Chauhan said police sought 14 days of custodial interrogation. The court granted four days. Chauhan said Nat told the court that he would cooperate with the investigation and wanted the truth to come out.
During his custodial interrogation, police will reconstruct the crime. An important aspect of the investigation is whether Nat sexually assaulted other girls in the past.
Dahod superintendent of police Rajdeepsinh Zala said the probe will investigate all aspects. He added that the detailed postmortem report was awaited and would throw more light on the crime.
On Monday, Congress spokesman Parthivrajsinh Kathavadia said, "There are several pictures available of Nat in Sangh uniform attending
RSS sessions. There are also pictures of him attending VHP events. Will RSS and VHP protest against this person?"
These photographs were circulated widely on social media in Dahod. On social media, many were demanding that Nat be given the death penalty.
Gujarat Congress spokesman Manish Doshi said instances of rape and sexual harassment at educational institutions are on the rise and the Dahod case must be tried in a fast-track court.
