Knife attack sparks tension in Udaipur
Udaipur: MB Hospital premises in the city remained tense on Friday over a stabbing incident in Surajpole police station area late on Thursday night, prompting police to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
The family of the stabbing victim, Shoeb, a resident of Helawadi, and scores of people from his community created a ruckus at the hospital.

Shoeb was brought to MB Hospital after he was stabbed with a knife in the shoulder allegedly by Chetan Singh Panwar, a resident of Raoji Ka Hata, around 10pm on Thursday, police said. Panwar was going from Kalaji-Goraji towards Gulaab Bagh on his bike when Shoeb came on his motorcycle at a high speed and crossed in front of Chetan. The two youths had an argument over this, and Chetan attacked Shoeb with a knife, said a police official. Some passersby rushed a bleeding Shoeb, the knife stuck to his shoulder, to the hospital.
“Although Panwar fled immediately after attacking Shoeb, he was arrested late at night. Shoeb underwent surgery to have the knife removed from his shoulder. His condition is said to be out of danger,” said a police official.
A large crowd gathered at the hospital in the night, shouting slogans and staging a protest over the attack. The matter was settled only after a police team persuaded them to maintain peace later at night. The protesters demanded that the accused’s house be bulldozed and that a member of his family be provided a govt job. The protesters repeated the demand on Friday, too.
After police drove the crowd away and spoke to Shoeb’s family, some members of the community went to Hathipole area and pelted stones at shops, breaking the glass windowpanes of some in the area.
On Friday, people from the Khateek community staged a protest outside the district collectorate, alleging that a temple and shops of their community were pelted with stones. They demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants who did this. The protest ended after Udaipur SP Yogesh Goyal spoke to the crowd and assured of immediate action.
