Musician Roy, known for his work in Hindi films like Bachchhan Paandey and Phone Bhoot, has made his foray into Tamil cinema with the song Theera Mazhai from Vijay Antony’s Mazhai Pidikkatha Manidhan, which he composed and lent his vocals to. In a chat with us, Roy opens up about learning to sing in Tamil, how he got this opportunity, working with
Vijay Antony and more...
‘VIJAY MILTON LIKED MY SCRATCH VERSON AND ASKED ME TO COMPOSE THE SONG’“My friend Kaunteya introduced me to director Vijay Milton. I sent some songs to him and he particularly liked this one. It was just a basic scratch, and he told me to compose it fully,” begins the musician.
“I feel blessed when people tell me that they don’t feel that a nonTamilian has sung this song. A few of the words were difficult to learn, so I did speaking exercises to learn to pronounce them,” he reveals.
‘VIJAY ANTONY SIR IS VERY MODERN IN HIS APPROACH’Talking about Vijay Antony, Roy says, “He is very modern in his approach and working with him was very chill. He lets you do what you want, but he also guides you all the way. When I was composing the beats, he told me that we could bring in some fresh elements to the sonic quality of the song.”
On his Hindi film compositions…● Whistle Theme (from Bachchhan Paandey) : When Akshay Kumar heard the theme, he felt that it was completely on point, but he wanted to go bigger in terms of sound and drama. Then, I worked on the song again, taking his and director Farhad Samji's input.
● Kaali Teri Gutt (from Phone Bhoot): This was a recreation of a popular Punjabi song. We recreated the whole track with a dance-y & a little modern vibe.
