Maujaan Hi Maujaan Movie Review : An endearing and entertaining story of inclusivity for the disabled

Critic's Rating: 4.0/5
STORY: A wealthy man, Shamsher Singh wants to marry his son Jimmy to a girl from a fit family, bereft of any diseases or disabilities to further his lineage in a healthy way. However, Jimmy falls for Amar, who has three differently abled brothers Karam, Jassi and Soni who are deaf, mute and blind. The couple tries to hide this fact from the Jimmy's father and their marriage is finalised with the help of Reet, who is Karam's girlfriend. Just as the marriage is being solemnised, Shamsher gets to know of the secret of the brothers' disabilities and throws a fit of anger. The film ends on a positive note with Shamsher realising his mistake of being biased against disabled people for no fault of theirs.

REVIEW: Brothers, Karam (Gippy Grewal), Jassi (Karamjit Anmol) and Soni (Binnu Dhillon) run a cafe in London and are doing pretty well despite their disabilities of being deaf, mute and blind. They are very protective of their only sister, Amar who is in love with Jimmy whose father Shamsher Singh Brar (Yograj Singh) is biased against handicapped people. The film opens on this depiction of disabled people being capable of running their business efficiently and taking care of their sister perfectly. Kudos to the film's director Smeep Kang for handling the subject with utmost sensibility in not tipping the balance towards making light of disabilities.
Gippy has given a genuine portrayal of a man challenged with hearing disabilities as he hears incorrect dialogues, often the opposite of what is being said. A lot of hilarity in the scenes emerges from the confusion of distorted words that Karam forcefully speaks to emphasis the comic element. Binnu plays a visually challenged man with sensitivity, even more so when he is hiding it from his sisters' in-laws. Karamjit, who is the mute character, is also playing the sign language expert and interpreter for his deaf brother, Karam and represents such people with ample delicacy.
As the three brothers prep for the wedding of their dear sister (Hashneen Chauhan) with the help of Reet (Tanu Grewal), the film thrives on situational comedy and puns for its entertainment value. A lot of comedy lies in the hindrance in the flow of communication between the characters. Yograj and Nasir Chinyoti, who plays a cop, play their parts with clarity.
The music score is melodious, including songs like Peg Paa which quite aptly describes how those who love the bottle can find reason in any situation to drink.
One of the strengths of the film in its duration, that of two hours and is able to keep the audiences rapt in the story without unnecessary fillers. The film ends on a moral and social lecture to Shamsher by the three brothers, and shames him for his prejudice against the disabled. The fact that the realisation of disability not being a human liability, but a divine decision, has not been stretched and warps up within the climax, leaves an endearing message while not diluting the entertainment of the film.
