Bhale Unnade Movie Review : A Quirky Romantic Dramedy

Critic's Rating: 2.5/5
Story: Radha (Raj Tarun) is a professional saree draper who exhibits feminine traits, breaking conventional masculinity stereotypes. Meanwhile, Krishna (Manisha Kandkur) seeks a partner who embodies traditional masculine qualities. This role reversal injects a fresh and humorous dynamic into the film, as Radha's gentle and quirky persona contrasts with Krishna's quest for an ideal, manly suitor. Will they be able to overcome their innate differences?

Review: Bhale Unnade sets itself apart from typical romantic comedies by flipping gender roles right from the outset. Set against the scenic backdrop of Visakhapatnam and Araku, director J Sivasai Vardhan skillfully incorporates the lush landscapes of the hills and the coastline of the Bay of Bengal to complement the evolving love story.

Raj Tarun shines in his portrayal of Radha, bringing natural comedic timing and charm to the character. His ability to embrace Radha's feminine traits without resorting to caricature adds authenticity to the role. Manisha Kandkur, as Krishna, delivers a confident performance, playing a modern woman searching for a traditionally masculine partner. Her chemistry with Raj Tarun is enjoyable. Together, the lead pair share a playful rapport, and while their romance feels light-hearted and fun, it occasionally lacks emotional depth, leaving some potential unexplored.

Abhirami Gopikumar plays Gouri, Radha’s supportive and spirited mother. Her relationship with Radha’s father, however, could have been integrated better. Ammu Abhirami, as the younger version of Gouri, and Indhu Preethi, as Krishna’s friend, portray minor character roles. Supporting performances by Hyper Aadi, Srikanth Iyengar, Racha Ravi, VTV Ganesh and Sudarshan inject much-needed humour, keeping the film's tone light. However, the reliance on comedic one-liners and situational comedy can occasionally feel forced, especially when the story meanders in the second half.

Adding to the spiritual undertone, veteran film director Singeetam Srinivasa Rao and classical artiste Leela Samson make pleasant cameo appearances, symbolising Radha and Lord Krishna’s legendary relationship. These moments provide the film with an added layer of charm.

While Bhale Unnade begins on an intriguing and quirky note, it struggles to maintain its momentum throughout. The screenplay, though promising in concept, loses its grip at various points, making certain sections feel stretched and less engaging than intended. The narrative, while fresh in its approach, could have been sharper.

From a technical standpoint, the film performs admirably. Nagesh Banell’s cinematography captures the natural beauty of Visakhapatnam and Araku, adding a visually appealing element that enhances the overall storytelling. The production values are commendable, and the film appears polished and well-executed with only minor flaws. The soundtrack, composed by Shekar Chandra, is a mixed bag. While the songs are catchy, the background score could have been more impactful.

Bhale Unnade is an enjoyable, light-hearted romantic dramedy with a fresh take on relationships and gender dynamics.
