Kalinga Movie Review : A rural drama with impressive direction and visually stunning moments

Critic's Rating: 2.5/5
Story: Kalinga follows Linga (Dhruva Vaayu), an orphan from Kalinga village in Telangana. Though carefree and fond of drinking, Ling is deeply in love with Paddu (Pragya Nayan). His life turns upside down when Bali (Sanjay), the troublemaking brother of the village head (Aadukalam Naren), sets his sights on Paddu, creating a rift between the couple. To win Paddu's hand, Linga must clear his family’s debts, all while fending off Bali's advances. The story hinges on whether Linga can overcome these challenges, protect Paddu, and reclaim his honour.

Review: Dhruva, who takes on multiple roles in Kalinga, leaves a strong impression on his performance, which feels raw and intense. His portrayal brings authenticity to the character, making him stand out. Pragya Nayan, as Paddu, adds charm and warmth to her role, delivering a balanced performance that complements the film's emotional core. However, Aadukalam Naren and Sanjay, playing the antagonists, fall a bit short in delivering the depth and menace their roles demand, making them less impactful in comparison. Lakshman Meesala, who plays Ling’s friend, provides a much-needed lighthearted and refreshing presence in the film.

Dhruva showcases his talent for direction and storytelling, managing to captivate the audience throughout the film, despite some pacing issues in certain areas. The cinematography, particularly in the forest and village sequences, is a major highlight. Moreover, the film’s background score is equally commendable. The music and sound design not only complement the visuals but also add layers of intensity to the storytelling. Dhruva's direction combined with solid technical execution ensures that the film stands out.

The film's first half skillfully draws the audience in, creating a sense of anticipation and tension that keeps viewers engaged. This careful buildup leads to a gripping and satisfying second half, where the plot unfolds with intensity and emotional payoff. Despite the familiar rural drama genre, Kalinga manages to stand out, offering audiences something new and refreshing. Its innovative use of special effects, combined with strong performances, especially from the lead actors, elevates the film beyond conventional storytelling.

Overall, Kalinga offers a fresh and engaging experience, making it a worthwhile watch for those seeking something new.
