Bardovi Movie Review : An intense exploration of the occult and human psyche

Critic's Rating: 3.5/5
Story: Anant regularly dreams about his mother and discovers a mysterious truth about her. To uncover the mystery, he turns to his uncle, Daduba.

Review: ‘Bardovi’ explores the themes of occult and black magic, delving deep into the human psyche. Director Karan Shivajirao Chavan uses his storytelling tools effectively, crafting a thought-provoking and memorable film. Set in the rural milieu of Kolhapur, the plot unfolds at a leisurely pace yet remains engaging with its atmospheric horror and refined direction. Addressing the subjects of afterlife and death, the film excels without compromising its narrative. The rich cultural backdrop and nuanced performances add further depth to this compelling story.

The film's plot centers on Anant (Chittaranjan Giri), a hearse driver who transports corpses to the crematorium. He is haunted by thoughts of his deceased mother (Chhaya Kadam), leading to increasing distress. Eventually, Anant seeks out his uncle, Daduba, who raised him after his mother's death. Anant confronts Daduba, pleading for the truth about his mother's demise. Daduba reveals the mystery of the Bardovi Granth, written texts to gain power and control over occult related subjects, that Anant's mother had stolen but could not master. The story takes a shocking turn as Anant uncovers the truth about his late mother.

‘Bardovi’ is a noteworthy addition to films exploring the themes of occult and black magic. Direction, cinematography, and music department of the film sync perfectly, creating a film that captivates for its roughly two-hour duration. Certain scenes are particularly powerful and linger long after the film ends. In one scene, a dead boy who has bonded with Anant lays his head in Anant's lap to sleep. In another, as Akka performs a ritual, dead birds suddenly start falling from the sky. This horror-drama caters to a niche audience, requiring a particular mindset to view the events of the film as its focus is not on conventional entertainment.

Chittaranjan Giri excels as Anant, portraying a man conflicted and constantly seeking answers to haunting questions. He powerfully conveys the weariness of a day job and the blurred reality he is forced to navigate. Chhaya Kadam delivers a stunning performance as Akka, the central figure in the plot. Virat Madke, playing Daduba, does a fine job in a peripheral yet essential role, adding a layer of mystery to the story. Each actor brings depth to their character, enhancing the film's overall impact and emotional resonance.

Karan Chavan deserves credit for his mature and sensible direction. He stays true to the core plot, maintaining tight control and preventing the film from going off track, which is a common risk with such themes. Vikram Tanajirao Patil's cinematography is exceptional and significantly aids Chavan in his work. Keen observers of cinema should watch for their future works. The film explores the mysteries of the unknown and, despite its challenging subject matter, tells a gripping and powerful story. Maintaining a sombre and serious mood throughout, it never deviates from its atmospheric horror.
